MACEDON. Thessalonica. Julia Domna, Augusta, 193-217. (Bronze, 26 mm, 10.00 g, 12 h), struck under Septimius Severus, 193-211. IOYΛΙΑ ΑΥΓΟΥCΤΑ Draped bust of Julia Domna to right. Rev. ΘΕCCΑΛΟ-ΝΙΚΕΩΝ Nike advancing to left, holding wreath in her right hand and palm frond in her left, over her left shoulder; in field left, crescent with points upwards. Touratsoglou Obverse V3/R -. Varbanov 4367 var. Rare variant with the crescent on the reverse. Nearly very fine.

The crescent appears frequently on the provincial coins of Thessaloniki, from the 1st century AD until the time of Commodus. During Commodus's rule it is quite common, but extremely uncommon during the Severan period and later. The presence of a crescent on the reverse of this coin might be an indication that it was minted during the first years of Septimius Severus.
