Unpublished bronze from Erythrai

Starting Price: 50 CHF
Hammer Price:  220 CHF
Lot 382

IONIA. Erythrai. Circa 325-320 BC. (Bronze, 13 mm, 2.36 g, 3 h), struck under the magistrate Pausanias. Head of Herakles facing, turned slightly to the right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. [EPY] / [Π]ΑΥΣΑΝΙAΣ Club above bow in bow case. Kinns 131. Rare, and of remarkably fine style. Very fine.

The appearance of a three-quarter facing head on a bronze coin is quite unexpected: the quality of the engraving is so high that one wonders whether this could have been a special donative issue.
