Justinian I, 527-565. Pentanummium (Bronze, 15 mm, 1.56 g, 11 h), Theoupolis (Antioch), 560-565. A N PT IS E N P S AVG Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Justinian to right. Rev. Cruciform monogram of I-O-Y-C-T-I-N-I-A-N-O-C within large C with points to right. BMC 410-413. DOC 272 var (inscription). MIBE 163. SB 245. A very attractive, very sharp, and very well struck piece with a lovely brown patina. Extremely fine.



Byzantine bronzes in top condition are unsurprisingly very rare. This is because they were constantly used, and re-used, over a lengthly period of time.
