England, the Plantagenet kings. John, 1199-1216. Penny (Silver, 18.5 mm, 1.32 g), Short cross type, London mint, Walter as moneyer, struck in the name of Henry II, 1207-circa 1210. HENRICVS REX Crowned bust of Henry II, holding cruciform scepter in his right hand. Rev. WALTER ON LV around voided short cross with quatrefoils in each angle. SCBI Mass 1698-1700. About very fine.



Coins like this one are not so rarely found in the east Mediterranean coast and can be associated with the endeavours of the pilgrims to the Holy Lands during the turbulent 12th century.
