SICILY. Syracuse. Dionysios I, 405-367 BC. Dekadrachm (Silver, 34 mm, 41.86 g, 11 h), signed by Euainetos, c. 405-400. Quadriga galloping to left, driven by female charioteer holding the reins with both hands; above, Nike flying right, holding wreath to crown the driver; in exergue, on two slightly raised lines, shield, pair of greaves, cuirass and crested helmet; below, [ΑΘΛΑ]. Rev. ΣΥΡΑ[ΚΟΣΙΩΝ] Head of Arethusa to left, wearing wreath of reeds, triple-pendant earring and necklace of pearls; around, four dolphins; below the dolphin swimming under Arethusa’s neck, signature ΕΥΑΙΝΕ. Dewing 882. Gallatin O. III-R.C. VI. SNG ANS 364 var. Nicely toned and basically attractive. With considerable traces of die rust, corrosion and surface deposits, otherwise. About extremely fine.

From the Stoecklin Collection, acquired from Hess AG in Luzern in 1950 by Dr. W. F. Stoecklin in memory of his mother, and with an attestation from E.S.G. Robinson of the British Museum.
