CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 240-228 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 19 mm, 6.39 g, 4 h), struck under magistrate Xenokrates. ΞΕ-ΝΟΚΡΑ/Τ-ΗΣ Armored cavalryman, riding horse moving to left, raising his right hand in salute and turning his bearded and laureate head to face the viewer; in upper field to right, monogram and pileus. Rev. ΤΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos, nude, riding dolphin to left, his body turned slightly back to right, holding a trident over his right shoulder in his right hand and holding his drapery in his upraised left; to right, monogram of ΣΩ; below, waves and cuttlefish. HN III 1058. SNG ANS 1258. Vlasto 957 (same obverse die). Lustrous. Areas flat struck, otherwise, extremely fine.

HPAKΛHTOΣ - [TAPAΣ] Owl standing right, head facing; olive branch to right; rose between owl and branch. HN Italy 1050. SNG ANS 1321. Vlasto 1089 (same dies). Clear, well struck example with beautiful details. Slightly off-center, otherwise, nearly very fine.

Head of Athena to right, wearing a pendant earring, a simple necklace and a Corinthian helmet adorned with Skylla hurling a stone; to right, Κ. Rev. EYΦ HPAKΛHIΩN Youthful Herakles standing facing, nude but for a strap across his chest and with the lion's skin over his right arm, holding a bow and arrow in his right hand and a club in his left; to left, above, Nike flying to left to crown Herakles; to right, Σ. HN III 1383. SNG ANS 68 (same dies). Van Kauren 80. Particularly artistic dies of fine style; well-struck, centered and clear. Good very fine.
