PAMPHYLIA. Aspendos. Circa 465-430 BC. Stater (Silver, 25 mm, 11.19 g, 3 h), overstruck on an uncertain stater of Paphos, c. 440s BC. Warrior advancing to right, holding shield and spear. Rev. EΣ-Τ -Ϝ Τriskeles to right; all within an incuse square. SNG France 12. Clear. Struck from a worn obverse die, and with considerable traces of overstriking, especially visible on the reverse, otherwise, about extremely fine.

When the reverse of this coin is turned upside-down, the eagle reverse type of Paphos can easily be seen: the beak on the left, tail on the right and the wings above and below. For another example of an Aspendian stater, struck with the same reverse die, overstruck on Paphos (identified as being of Onasi...), see CNG eSale 437, 2019, 144. That Paphian stater has a standing eagle rather than the flying one we have here.
