CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 333-331/0 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 20.5 mm, 7.89 g, 10 h), by the ΚΑΛ engraver. Nude rider on horse prancing to right, holding round shield and two lances with his left hand and striking downwards with a spear held in his upraised right; behind, to left, ⊢; to right, Λ; below, ΚΑΛ over Δ. Rev. ΤΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos seated astride dolphin to right, holding crested helmet with both hands; to left and right, eight-pointed star; below, ΦI. Fischer-Bossert Group 58, 745 (V285/R579). HN III 896. Vlasto 538 (same obverse die but from an earlier stage). Lightly toned and attractive. Struck from a slightly worn obverse die, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

TAPAΣ Taras riding dolphin left, holding shield decorated with hippocamp and trident; to left, ΦI; below, to right, murex shell. Fischer-Bossert 986ff. Vlasto 594-597. Uneven patina and struck from a worn obverse die, otherwise, very fine.
