SICILY. Entella. L. Sempronius Atratinus, circa 36 BC. Quadrans (Bronze, 20 mm, 5.24 g, 6 h). ATPATINOY Head of youthful Dionysos to right, wearing ivy wreath. Rev. ENTEΛΛINΩN around grape cluster on stem. CNS 18. HGC 2, 242. RPC I 654. SNG Copenhagen 239. Dark brown-green patina. Slightly worn obverse die, otherwise, very fine.

From the Vineyard Collection, ex A&B Collezionismo FPL Autumn 1999, 72.

Originally a legatus of Mark Antony, Atratinus abandoned his former master shortly before the battle of Actium and supported Octavian. A clever move – according to some – which prolonged his life and career for 24 years.
