Out 28. Jaaren (=in memory of the honorable gentleman, Justus de Jonge, priest in Amsterdam, who died on the 20th of January 1697 at the age of 28); below, in a cartouche flanked by palm branches, De Door is / een inganck / ten Leeven (=death is the entrance to life). Bemolt 560. De Beeldenaar 2012-1, 28 (this piece illustrated). Very rare. An attractive piece. Some minor casting faults and marks, otherwise, about extremely fine.

Acquired from Floris van Wanroij Fine Art in 2012.

Justus de Jonge (1669-1697) was a Calvinist priest in Amsterdam, about whom little is remarkable. This memorial medal is made from an obverse plaque by Abeele (the cartouche is flanked by palm branches, Muller’s very similar obverse has a cartouche flanked by putti) combined with a specially made blank reverse, which was then engraved with the decedent’s details.
