John II Angelus Comnenus was the grandson of the illegitimate son of Michael II, Despot of Epirus. After the death of Michael II in 1271, John I gained control of Thessaly and created the state of Great Wallachia, completely independent from the Despotate of Epirus. His capital city was located in Hypate (or Nea Patra) south of modern Lamia. John II was the last ruler of this short lived state as he died without an heir in 1318.
