Lot 614

Q. Pomponius Musa, 66 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 3.94 g, 6 h), Rome. Laureate head of Apollo to right; behind, lyre key. Rev. Q POMPONI MVSA Calliope standing to right, playing lyre resting on a short column. Crawford 410/2b. Babelon (Pomponia) 10. Sydenham 812. Same dies as Heritage (18.4.2013) lot 24805. Well centered example with nice details. Nearly very fine.

From a European collection, ex Obolos 7, 9 July 2017, 255.

Calliope was the protector of Epic poetry and oratory. It is believed that she is the Muse that Homer was asking guidance from in the first stich of Odyssey: ἄνδρα μοι ἔννεπε, μοῦσα, πολύτροπον, ὃς μάλα πολλὰ πλάγχθη... Of course, this Musa, being from Latium, only spoke Latin, rather than Greek. So when Homer asked all she did was reply, "That's all Greek to me!".
