PHRYGIA. Eumeneia. Agrippina Junior, Augusta, 50-59. Assarion (Bronze, 17.5 mm, 2.95 g, 12 h), Bassa, daughter of Kleon, archiereia (=high priestess), struck under Nero, 54-55. AΓΡΙΠΕΙΝΑ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΗ Draped bust of Agrippina to right; behind neck, round countermark containing a draped female bust to right. Rev. ΒΑΣΣΑ ΚΛΕΩΝΟΣ ΑΡΧΙΕΡΗΑ ΕVΜΕΝΕΩΝ Cybele seated to left on throne, holding patera and resting elbow upon tympanum. BMC 44. Howgego - (this countermark unrecorded ). RPC I 3151. With dark brown glossy surfaces and a lovely portrait of Nero's mother. Good very fine.



This is one of the very few Roman coins that was struck under the authority of a female official.
