KINGS OF BOSPOROS. Sauromates II with Caracalla, 174/5-210/1. Stater (Electrum, 18 mm, 7.60 g, 12 h), year ZΦ = 507 = 210-211. ΒΑСΙΛΕΩС CAYPOMATOY Diademed and draped bust of Sauromates to right. Rev. ZΦ Laureate head Caracalla to right; to right, eagle (or crow?) standing to left. MacDonald 516/2. Same dies as G&M 147 (2006) 1751 and Rauch 94 (2016) 275. With an unusual reverse symbol, only struck during the last regnal year of Sauromates; only a few examples are known. Very fine.

From the collection of Pavlo Skoropadskyi.

Sauromates in Greek literally means "The one with the lizard eye". Interestingly enough, numerous 18th and 19th century European travelers often remarked how contemporary Crimeans had a rather lizard-like look (as Voltaire's comment, "Cet homme là-bas [Grégoire Scorovoda] a un visage comme un lézard.").
