ASIA MINOR. Uncertain. 6th century BC. Diobol (Silver, 11 mm, 1.41 g, 12 h). Head of lion with open jaws to right. Rev. Hindquarters of a lion to right; all within an incuse square. Apparently unknown and unpublished. A bizarre and perplexing piece. Nearly very fine.

The relics of the beginning of coinage are often most perplexing, especially because the types they bear cannot be directly related to later known mints. What we have here is virtually unparalleled: a lion's head (and foreleg?) to right on the obverse and, on the reverse, the same animal's hindparts. What this means is, frankly, beyond me.
