SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Time of Seleukos I and slightly later, c. 312-270 BC. (Lead, 26 mm, 22.43 g, 12 h), in the name and types of Alexander the Great, imitating a tetradrachm of Babylon, and possibly from the Gulf area. Head of youthful Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. ΒA]ΣIΛE[ΩΣ] [ΑΛ]ΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Zeus seated left on high-backed throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and, in his right, eagle standing right with closed wings; in field to left; under throne, MI. cf. Price 3747 for prototype. A very unusual item. Some corroded areas, otherwise, very fine.



This was very probably used as currency in northern Arabia.
