KINGS OF CAPPADOCIA. Ariarathes VI Epiphanes Philopator, circa 130-112/0 BC. (Bronze, 18 mm, 4.54 g, 12 h), Eusebeia Mazaka. Diademed and draped bust of Ariarathes VI to right, wearing high bashlyk; behind his neck, circular countermark with a facing radiate and bust of Helios. Rev. [ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ] /ΑΡΙΑΡΑΘΟΥ Athena seated left, elbow resting on shield to right, holding Nike in her right hand and spear in her left. Henseler 20. HGC 7, 825. Simonetta 5. A clear example with a fine and interesting countermark. Some flatness on the reverse from the countermark, otherwise, good very fine.

Interesting enough, the Helios countermark is always punched in the same place, behind Ariarathes' head, defacing the usual monogram that had previously appeared there. Was there a deeper meaning for this action?.
