PHRYGIA. Laodicea ad Lycum. Time of Augustus, Circa 20 BC - 1 AD. (Bronze, 21 mm, 8.29 g, 12 h), Seitalkas, magistrate. ΣEITAΛKAΣ Head of Seitalkas to right, wearing ivy wreath. Rev. ΔHMOΣ ΛAOΔIKEΩN Laureate bust of Demos to right, with drapery on his far shoulder. BMC 54. RPC I 2892 corr. With a noble and elegant portrait of Seitalkas. Dark green patina. Some surface roughness, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

Exactly who this Seitalkas (Sitalces) is uncertain, other than that he must have been a notable of Laodicea ad Lycum. His name recalls that of a number of 5th century BC Thracian kings, but whether there is any connection appears doubtful. In any case, his highly individualistic portrait is clearly that of a real person, rather than a personification, like that of Demos on the reverse of this coin. Particularly intriguing is the fact that he is wearing an ivy-wreath, a rather unusual headdress for a mortal: could he be a priest of Dionysos?.
