John III Ducas (Vatatzes), emperor of Nicaea, 1222-1254. Tetarteron nomisma (Bronze, 22 mm, 1.60 g, 12 h), Anonymous issue, Magnesia. Large B formed of pellets; to left and right, triangular motif formed by three pellets. Rev. John Vatatzes seated facing on throne, holding cruciform scepter and akakia. Unpublished but cf. DOC 3, SB 2151 and LBC 311-2. Spectacular dark green glossy surfaces; very pleasant example. Some flatness on obverse and minor edge splits, otherwise, extremely fine.
