Manuel I Comnenus, 1143-1180. Aspron Trachy (Electrum, 33 mm, 4.36 g, 5 h), First coinage, Constantinople, 1143-1152 (?). IC XC / O EMMANOYHΛ (across the fields) Bust of Christ Pantocrator facing, wearing cross nimbus with pellet in each arm, his right hand raised in blessing and holding book of Gospels in his left. Rev. ΜΑΝVΗΛ - ΔϵCΠΟΤ / ΜΡ On the left, Manuel, standing facing holding labarum-headed scepter in his right hand and anexikakia in his left, and with a collar piece containing five jewels; on the right, the Virgin, standing facing on the right, raising her right hand to crown the emperor. DOC 2a. SB 1957. An attractive example, toned and clear, struck on a particularly broad flan. Unimportant scratches and graffiti under tone, otherwise, good very fine.
