Lot 455

SELEUKID KINGS OF SYRIA. Antiochos I Soter, 281-261 BC. Stater (Gold, 18 mm, 8.43 g, 6 h), Aï Khanoum, c. 266-261. Diademed head of Antiochos I to right, with elderly features. Rev. [B]AΣIΛEΩΣ [A]NTIOXOY Apollo seated left on omphalos, testing arrow, held in his right hand and resting his right on his bow; to inner left, OΔ monogram. SC 435.1. ESM 695β. Extremely sharp and bright; a wonderful coin. Some marks and minor scratches; slightly off-centered reverse, otherwise, virtually as struck.

The Seleukid gold is extremely rare compared to the Ptolemaic, although we know that gold coins were minted in huge quantities. One of the reasons is that the Seleukid empire was forced to pay huge amounts in gold and silver to the Roman Republic as a war indemnity. According to the treaty of Apamea in 188 BC, Antiochos had to pay 15.000 talents to the Romans.
