Extremely rare Tetartemorion from Tarsos

Starting Price: 75 CHF
Hammer Price:  75 CHF
Lot 402

CILICIA. Tarsos. Tarkumuwa (Datames), Satrap of Cilicia and Cappadocia, 384-361/0 BC. Tetartemorion (Silver, 5.5 mm, 0.19 g, 9 h). Facing head of nymph with cloak fastened around her neck. Rev. Draped bust of Aphrodite to right, wearing taenia, earring and necklace. Cf. Pecunem 16, 2014, 616 (Hemiobol). Cf. SNG Levante 217-218 (Obol). Cf. SNG France 310-311 (Obol). Apparently extremely rare. Lightly toned and well centered. With uncleaned deposits as found, otherwise, good very fine.

This tiny coin belongs to a series that is basically known from obols (c. .60-.80 g, and hemiobols (c. .34 g). Not only is this piece of much lighter weight, it is struck from much smaller dies; thus it is a true smaller denomination, rather than just an underweight example produced in error.
