CILICIA. Tarsos. Tiribazos, satrap of Lydia, 388-380 BC. Obol (Silver, 10.5 mm, 0.51 g, 1 h). Nymph kneeling left, casting astragaloi. Rev. Head of a young male to right. SNG France 239. SNG Levante 65. Toned as found and well-centered, a very attractive coin. Good very fine.

The type of the nymph casting knucklebones (throwing dice!) is a rather endearing one, and here must refer to a local myth at Tarsos that had appealed to Tiribazos (it also appeared on some of his staters). Interesingly enough, a similar myth seems to have existed in Thessaly, at Kierion (see our lot 226 in this auction).
