IOHANNES DE WIT. NAT: 1625 Bust of Johan de Witt to right, wearing skull cap and judicial robes; below bust, in tiny letters, I S. Rev. HOE DRAAIT DES WERELDS LOT. DE WIT, OP ‘T MOORDSCHAVOT / WELEER GEKERFT, GESNEEN, STAAT DUS WEER GAAF IN EEN / WAT MIST NU ‘T VADERLAND? / HAAR MOND EN REGTER- / HAND. / 20 AUGUST: 1672 (=how the things of the world change! De Witt, who we saw torn to pieces on the scaffold, we see here whole again. O Fatherland, this is the mouth and the right hand you lost on 20 August). A beautifully toned and sharp example. Virtually as struck.
