Plaquettepenning, or Hollow medal (Silver, 64mm, 51.42 g 12), on Princess Mary and the young William III, by Pieter van Abeele, with his signatures on the obverse and the reverse, and his silver mark on the edge, Amsterdam, 1654. MARIA D.G.PRINCEPS M.BRIT.AVRANT.DOTARIA.ETC Draped bust of Princess Mary to left, her hair elaborately coifed and with a large drop earring and a pearl necklace; to right, PVA(ligate)BEELE.F.; fields covered with floral designs. Rev. Draped bust of the child William III, turned slightly to the right, wearing an elaborate hat; below, on ribbon, WILHELMVS III D.G / PRINC.ARAVS.ETC. / AN - 1654; in field to left, PVA(ligate).F.; around, elaborate wreath of laurel and fruits. Eimer 192. Frederiks 2b. MI, I, p. 417, 55. Van Loon II, p. 375. A lovely, beautifully toned piece. Usual blow hole on the edge. Flesh areas of both Mary and William, and reverse fields, very carefully polished long ago, otherwise, Extremely fine.
