JOHAN VAN OLDENBARNEVELT Facing bust of Oldenbarnevelt facing, wearing a ruff and sober robes. Rev. Dees vader van ons vaderland, / Bezeglde, met eige hand, / ‘s Lands vryheit tween veertig jare / En storf standvastig voor ‘t gemeen, Doen hem de strot wiert afgesneen / Door ‘t moordmes van syn moordenaren (=this father of our country, who struggled for 42 years as the shield of our liberty, and who worked constantly for the public good, finally his throat was cut by the barbarous knife of his murderers) Poem of six lines between palm and laurel branches. Van Loon II, pp. 109-111. A splendid, proof-like example with fine toning. Virtually as struck.
