KINGS OF ARMENIA. Tigranes VI, first reign, circa 60-62 or later. Tetrachalkon (Bronze, 20 mm, 4.93 g, 12 h), second series, Artagigarta (?), 60-62. Diademed and draped head of Tigranes VI to right, wearing five-pointed tiara decorated with star. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ TIΓPANOY MEΓAΛOY Nike standing to right, holding wreath with which she crowns the king's name. ACV 162-163. CAA 148. Kovacs 198. A well centered example; with a pleasant patina and a strong portrait. Struck from a slightly worn reverse die as usual, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Yerets’ Kariatin, Switzerland.

Tigranes VI, known also as "Gaius Julius Tigranes", was son of Alexander who was brother of Tigranes V, thus great-grandson of Herod the Great. He spent most of his life in Rome until he was appointed King by Nero shortly before 60 AD. As an ally of Rome he attacked the Kingdom of Adiabene, a client state of the Parthians and ally of the Jews. This is considered as the first act of the forthcoming Jewish war.
