Irene Komnene, 1222-c.1239. Seal or Bulla (Lead, 31 mm, 29.45 g, 12 h). O ΛΥΤΡΩΤΗC (The Redeemer) Christ standing on a circular dais. Rev. HPEINH EUCERECTATH /AVΓOVCTA KOMNHNH Eirene Komnene standing on an oval dais, wearing a high crown (probably what was then called the modiolos) and a loros ornamented with a shield design at bottom. She holds the right hand before her and a scepter in the left. DO Seals 6, 103.1. Zacos–Veglery, no. 119b. Very rare imperial seal. Holed in the same place as the example in DOC, otherwise, about very fine.



Irene Komnene was the daughter of Theodore Laskaris, first emperor of Nikaia, and was the wife of his successor John Dukas-Vatatzes.
