Marcus Aurelius, 161-180. Aureus (Gold, 18 mm, 2.54 g, 12 h), Barbaric imitation from the north-east Europe. Barbarized inscription. Laureate head of Marcus Aurelius to right. Rev. Barbarised inscription. Mars (?) standing to right, holding shield and spear. No close parallels found in the official issues. With an unusual fine, for an imitation, portrait. Some scratches and removed from jewelery, otherwise, good fine.

What is interesting about this coin apart from the particularly low weight, are the tremendous differences between the style of the obverse and the reverse. It looks like the two dies were engraved by two totally different "artists". The head of Marcus Aurelius was carefully engraved by an artist who was familiar with the Roman contemporary art, while the reverse is crude and totally barbarized. A very interesting coin indeed.
