ASIA MINOR. Uncertain. 1st Century BC. (Bronze, 26 mm, 16.47 g, 12 h). Bare head to right. Rev. Hasta, sella quaestoria and fiscus; Q below. RPC I 5409. A clear example with a dark green-brown patina. Very fine.

An enigmatic issue: it has been variously attributed to Brutus, Octavian or the governor of Syria, Gaius Sosius. There is also a possibility that the Q on the reverse may refer to the head of the Roman intelligence service (the Frumentarii), but this is uncertain (it is known that at the time this piece was issued the director was named Iacobus Vinculum).
