MACEDON. Koinon of Macedon. Pseudo-autonomous issue, struck during the reign of Gordian III, 238-244. Triassarion (Bronze, 26 mm, 11.48 g, 7 h), Beroea. AΛEΞANΔPOY Diademed head of Alexander the Great to right, with hair drawn backward as if flowing in the wind. Rev. KOINON MAKEΔONΩN B NEΩKO Alexander the Great, in armor, throwing a spear downward, riding Bukephalas galloping to right; below Bukephalas, OΛYMΠIA in two lines. AMNG 795 (same dies). A well struck, clear coin with attractive details and patina. Uncommon with the inscription OΛYMΠIA. Very fine.

From a Basel collector formed before 1990.

This coin commemorates the games held in Beroea that honored Alexander and also had Olympic status.
