Italy, Bologna. Julius II (Giuliano Della Rovere). 1503-1513. Giulio (?) (Silver, 28mm, 4.20 g 3), 1506-1508. IVLIVS.II.PONTIFEX.MAXIMVS. Bare-headed bust of Julius II to right, wearing elaborate robes and a medallion bearing the head of St. Peter. Rev. S.P.BONONIA.DOCET St. Petronius seated facing on throne, holding a model of the city of Bologna in his right hand and a crozier in his left; below, shield bearing the arms of Bologna. CNI X, p. 65, 64 var. Muntoni 96. Rare. Toned and with a powerful portrait. Good very fine.

This piece was struck by Julius II soon after he expelled Bologna’s hereditary tyrant, Giovanni II Bentivoglio. From that point on Bologna remained under the firm control of the Papacy until its incorporation into the Kingdom of Italy in 1860.
