Lot 105

MYSIA, Pergamon. Autonomous issues, circa 104-98 BC. Cistophoric tetradrachm (Silver, 27mm, 12.66 g 12). Basket (cista mystica) from which snake coils; around, ivy wreath with fruits. Rev. Two snakes coiled around a bow case; between the snake heads, ΜΗ; to left, monogram of ΠΕΡΓ; to right, thyrsos entwined by a serpent. Kleiner 21. SNG von Aulock 7469. Very well struck and most attractively toned. Extremely fine.

From a collection in the USA.

Frankly, cistophoric tetradrachms are most often found fairly worn, mistruck and badly centered; as such they are among the least attractive of all Greek coins. But a coin like this one, in such good condition and so well-struck, allows us to really see the graphic power of the religiously inspired designs that are its types.
