Very rare Helvetii Quinarius

Starting Price: 450 CHF
Hammer Price:  480 CHF
Lot 75

CENTRAL EUROPE, Helvetii (?). Mid to late 1st century BC. Quinarius (Silver, 12mm, 1.91 g 10). Stylized head to left, wearing necklace. Rev. [VINILLI] or [VINILLOS] Horse with long tail galloping left; below, pellet. D. Allen 78, pl. 28, 21. Bulletin de l'association des amis du musée monétaire (Lausanne) 20/2007, p. 23, 3. Castelin 565. Cf. DT 3389 (Arverni). Flesche -. LT -. Wendling III, 20‘402-08. Very rare, of particularly nice style and struck in good silver. A magnificent example in extraordinarily good state of preservation and apparently among the finest, if not the finest known example of this fascinating type. Reverse slightly off center, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the Berlin Collection.

This type is known from only very few pieces found in the Western part of Switzerland. The fact that most of these coins were produced for local purposes makes it very likely that they have been produced in this area.
