GAUL, Sequani. Togirix, mid 1st century BC. Quinarius (Silver, 12mm, 1.84 g 2). TOGIRIX Head of Roma to left. Rev. TOGIRI Horse galopping left; serpent below. ABC 100. BMC 366-397. DT 3248-3250. LT 5550. A beautiful example with an excellent old cabinet tone. Slightly off center as usual, otherwise, extremely fine.

“The Sequani ‘they who flow’ (named after a river?) occupied Upper Burgundy between the rivers Saône and Rhône. The capital was Vesontio ‘river place?’ (modern Besançon, Doubs). Q. Julius Togirix ‘axe king’ was a Gallic chief who took a Roman name” (cf. ABC p. 32).
