Lot 500

CAPPADOCIA. Caesaraea-Eusebia. Trajan, 98-117. (Bronze, 16 mm, 2.63 g, 12 h), Pseudo-autonomous, struck under the presbeutes Titus Pomponius Bassus, dated RY 3 = 100/1. Turreted and draped bust of Tyche to right. Rev. ΕΠΙ ΒΑϹ-ϹΟΥ Pyramid; below, ΕΤ Γ (date). Ganschow 150. RPC 3133. Sydenham 236. Somewhat rough surfaces, otherwise, very fine.

T. Pomponius Bassus was suffect consul in 94 and later served as governor of Cappadocia-Galatia until the year 100. Our coin therefore was minted during the very last year of his governorship. A few years later, Pliny the Younger sent him a letter congratulating him on using his time after retirement from the senate wisely (that is: daily exercise, reading, learning something new every day). "Ita senescere oportem virum..." Pliny, Epistulae, IV.23.
