Lot 288

CARIA. Uncertain mint. Circa 500-480 BC. Tetrobol (Silver, 11.5 mm, 2.25 g). Lion head to right. Rev. Irregular incuse square. Rosen 616 (this coin). Extremely rare and possibly unique. Somewhat porous, otherwise, very fine.

From the Dr. Paul Peter Urone Collection and the Johnathan P. Rosen Collection, ex Numismatic Fine Arts, 18 October 1990, 777, Münzen und Medaillen 72, 6 October 1987, 306 and Numismatic Fine Arts 2, 25 March 1976, 230.

The attribution to a mint is Caria is only tentative. Rosen, himself, noted that "the incuse punch is not typically Carian...thus, Caria may not be the region of minting".
