CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 302-280 BC. Nomos (Silver, 20 mm, 7.46 g, 8 h). Nude youth on horseback galloping to left, holding shield; to right, ΣΛ; below, ΦIΛΩN. Rev. TAPAΣ Taras riding dolphin to left above waves, his right arm outstretched [holding Nike who crowns him]. HGC 1, 815; HN Italy 964; Vlasto 685. Some surface roughness and light cleaning scratches, otherwise, very fine.



Horses were the pride and joy of Tarentum's aristocracy, who were famed for their equestrian prowess, whether as cavalrymen in war, or as contestants in races.
